DESIGN PROCESS
This board illustrates my inspiration and design process used for an embroidery. The Design Brief and Keywords were: Victorian, Dark & Light, and Symbols of Tradition, demonstrated with multiple dark and light colors and finishes of the crystals, positive trefoil shape of the Botanee’ Cross and the negative shapes on the purse flap. The inset photo shows the embroidery realized as a necklace. This sample was featured in the Fire Mountain Gems catalogue and recognized in a Design Contest as a Finalist.
The Design Brief for this project was Balenciaga in Hawaii. I combined Balenciaga’s use of beautifully controlled volumes of fabric and his respect for traditional craft techniques which he employed to decorate fabric. Researching Hawaii I realized that it is 41% Water which appear blue or aquamarine. An abundance of waterfalls, rivers, inlet pools, underwater caves and of course the surrounding ocean create this effect.
This design was a Finalist in the Paris American Academy competition.
